Small, 0.5" dark red to black colored edible berry. Fruits are pear-shaped and quite juicy.
Description: Small or medium sized bush or tree to 15-25ft. Easily trained into a short hedge
or bush. The White Stopper is also a good candidate for bonsai. Flowers are white or slightly yellow in color, and borne in large
groups. Foliage is scented.
Hardiness: Moderately hardy,
can survive short frosts and freezes.
Growing Environment: Trees are not very particular
about soils. Water fairly regularly. Grows
well in shade, part-shade, and is very drought tolerant. Plants
are also highly tolerant of various soil types and grow well near salt
water.
Propagation: By seeds.
Uses: Fleshy fruit, usually eaten fresh. The tree is most commonly used as a street tree, or is trained into a hedge. Attracts birds.
Native Range: Native to southern Florida, the Carribean, southern Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala.
