The hard shelled nuts contain an edible, though sometimes difficult to extract seed, which has a buttery-walnut like flavor. Also yields an edible oil that has a variety of uses. Once considered an important tree for local Native American tribes, it was used for the edible nuts, and also for various medicinal purposes. Medium to large sized tree up to 85 ft / 25 m.
