Samanea saman
a.k.a. Rain Tree, Saman, French Tamarind

A large, wide-canopied tree that is famously native to the tropics.

Description: Huge tree, can grow to 100ft+, with a giant crown that can be as wide as the tree is tall, though most specimens remain much smaller. Leaves are fairly large and bi-pinnate. They close up at night or when hit by rain. Frilly, ornamental pink flowers are characteristic of the Albizia's and the tree is sometimes included in this genus. The fruits are woody pods which contain several seeds and a pulp that is supposedly sugar sweet and edible.

Hardiness: Hardy to about 32F.

Growing Environment: Grow in full sun. Water regularly. Grow in rich, well-drained, moist soil.

Propagation: By seeds.

Uses: Sometimes planted as an ornamental for its symmetrical, curving crown which is quite distinctive on the landscape. The wood has a variety of uses as well.
