Brazilian Orchid Tree
White flowered tree with large flowers resembling orchids. The orchid tree is a popular ornamental in subtropical and tropical regions.
Medium sized tree, usually to 20-30ft.
Hardy to 22-24F. Sunset Zones: 13, 18-23 USDA: 10+
A fairly adaptable tree, it survives well in both humid tropical climates as well as drier, subtropical climates. Water regularly, but will take infrequent watering. Grow in full sun or light shade. Trees produce new growth heavily after pruning and if the tree is desired as an ornamental, prune following the summer flowering period. Flowers bloom heavily in summer but may persist off and on for much of the year. Flowers are followed by 6-12", woody, pod fruit.
Planted as an ornamental for its beautiful orchid-like flowers.
Native to South America.
