Monkey Cacao
Herrania imbricata

A cacao/chocolate relative bearing yellow, lobed pods filled with white flesh and large seeds. The flesh is said to be edible and seeds are said to be used like chocolate.

Description: Small understory rainforest tree, usually to 15-20ft. Leaves are long, up to and over one foot. Flowers and fruits are borne directly from the trunk.

Hardiness: Hardiness is unknown, at least 50F but probably lower.
Sunset Zones: 24, H1, H2
USDA: 11+

Growing Environment: Growing conditions are not well studied, but the tree seems to enjoy a tropical climate, with high humidity and temperatures no lower than 50F. It does well in shady or part-shade locations. Provide consistent water throughout the year.

Propagation: By seeds.

Uses: The fruits can be used much like cacao fruits. The tree is a slender ornamental, with pretty, long leaves, profuse small flowers in season and striking fruits that linger on the trunk for many weeks.

Native Range: Native to the Amazon jungle region of South America.
