Maraja Palm 
Bactris maraja

A small palm tree bearing a circular, dark purple-black fruit. Pulp is white, surrounding a single seed and has a pleasant, sweet tasting flavor.

Description: A short palm, usually growing to 10-15 feet. Branches are covered in yellow or black colored spines growing up to 2" long.

Uses: The fruits are edible and said to be very tasty. The tree is locally cultivated and the fruits are commercialized on a small scale in its native range.
