Wine Palm

Caryota urens

a.k.a. Jaggery Palm, Toddy Palm, Hardy Fishtail Palm

Medium to large sized palm produced dark red/black fruits which are generally inedible. Sap from the tree is high in sugar and is used to make syrup and an alcoholic beverage.

Description

Medium to large sized palm to 30-50ft. Leaves look like the fin of a fish, hence its other common name.

Hardiness

The wine palm is hardy to 22-26F. There are mountain forms which tend to be cold-hardier.

Growing Environment

Grows well in full sun or part shade. Needs well-drained soil.

Propagation

By seed, which can take a few months to germinate.

Uses

Sap is used to make syrup and an alcoholic beverage.

Native Range

Native from India through Burma. Occurs naturally from tropical sea level areas to mountain slopes up to 3000ft.
