Beach Hibiscus
Hibiscus tiliaceus

Shrubby water-loving hibiscus known for its pretty yellow flowers which end up orange.

Description: Medium sized, shrubby tree to 30-40ft, but often growing in spreading canopies 10-20ft high. The flowers bloom yellow and within 24 hours change to a final color of orange before wilting. In tropical climates, the trees may bloom year-round.

Hardiness: Hardy to the 30's.

Growing Environment: The beach hibiscus naturally grows along river banks and lake fronts, so it tolerates flooding and wet soil very well. It will also grow in poor soils.

Propagation: By seeds, suckers, cuttings.

Uses: Planted as an ornamental, particularly in wet areas and along fresh water bodies. The young leaves are edible and various parts of the plant have historically been used for medicinal purposes.

Native Range: Native to southeast Asia and the South Pacific.
