a.k.a. Perfume Tree

The ylang-ylang (pronounced ee-lang ee-lang) is a medium to large sized tree producing yellow flowers with long trailing petals and a strong aromatic scent. The sweet smelling flowers are used in perfumes.

Description

Large tree, sometimes up to 50-75ft tall. Naturally grows in warm, moist, humid regions.

Hardiness

Grows best in frost free climates and must be protected from freezing or near freezing temperatures.

Growing Environment

Grow in full sun. Water regularly. Provide humidity.

Propagation

By seeds which can take a few months to germinate.

Uses

Flowers are used to scent perfumes, cosmetics, lotions and other such products. The scent is also used medicinally for its calming effects.

Native Range

Native to Malaysia and Indonesia, but has naturalized throughout most of the larger Pacific Island groups, Northern Australia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
