Commonly grown as an ornamental for its flowers and foliage.

Plant Cultivation

Herbaceous shrub to 7-10ft. The shell ginger produces rhizomes which are hardy to the 20's. The plant will die back with freezing temperatures. In cold climates, rhizomes can be dug up and stored indoors for the winter. Shell ginger's grow best in shade or filtered sunlight. Provide ample water and humidity.
Propagation: By seed.

Origin and Distribution

Native to Indonesia. Now grown throughout the world as an ornamental.
