A rough, mottled skinned fruit up to 8" long, containing thin white flesh and large, flat, bright red seeds which are chewed for their stimulatory effects.
Description: A medium sized tree from 40-60ft tall.
Hardiness: It is not hardy and will be injured or killed by frost.
Growing Environment: Will grow in full sun or part shade. Water regularly, as the plant thrives in wet, humid environments.
Propagation: Usually by seed, although cuttings are sometimes used. Trees will bear in 7-10 years from seed.
Uses: The bitter seeds are chewed, or prepared for use in medicines and foods. The seeds contain caffeine and theobromine. The name for cola drinks is derived from this plant, although the cola nut is no longer used as an ingredient in most commercial drinks.
Native Range: Native to West Africa.
