Sea Grape relative producing small 1/3", purple colored fruits. Fruits are edible and very popular with birds.
Description: Small shrub to medium sized tree generally to no more than 25ft high, but often remaining around 10-12ft with shrubby growth.
Hardiness: The pigeon plum is hardy to short frosts and freezes, but generally prefers a warm climate (like South Florida).
Growing Environment: It is highly adapted to both sandy soil and salty conditions, often growing near the shoreline. Trees also show considerable tolerance of drought and poor soil conditions.
Propagation: By seeds.
Uses: Eaten fresh out of hand. Tree is also planted as an ornamental.
Native Range: Native to South Florida, the Carribean, and nearby shorelines.
