Carica dodecaphylla (Jaracatia spinosa)

a.k.a. Tree Papaya, Thorny Papaya, Deer's Papaya

Yellow, ovaloild fruit with five lobes, somewhat resembling a bloated star fruit. The sweet flavor of its gelatinous pulp is said to be much unlike the papaya.

Uses

Eaten raw, but when unripe, the fruits contains an milk that is irritating when digested. Fruits are either boiled, or the milk is let to drain before they are eaten.

Plant Cultivation

Large tree up to 60+ feet tall. Leaves are small, slender, and deep green, found in leaflets of 5-8.
Propagation: By seed.

Origin and Distribution

Native to savannahs, riverbanks and forested areas throughout Brazil.
